A snowfall warning is in effect for the Airdrie - Cochrane - Olds - Sundre area.

Widespread snowfall accumulations of 10 to 20 centimetres (cm) are expected by Thursday evening, according to Environment Canada's weather alert update issued Wednesday morning.

"This long duration snowfall event could produce total snowfall amounts as high as 30 to 50 cm along the foothills," the warning states. "Snow will intensify today over the central foothills. Heavy snow will spread southward to the international border this evening."

The snow will be heavy and wet, and will be mixed with rain in some areas, so total snowfall accumulations will vary widely.

The federal agency says snow will taper off to flurries Thursday evening then end early Friday morning.
